About Us

Árvore, Cooperativa de Atividades Artísticas CRL, is a cultural cooperative recognised by the Portuguese State as a private organisation of public utility.

Founded in 1963 by artists, writers, architects and intellectuals who sought to create new conditions for cultural production and dissemination, freely and independently, Árvore was born from a dream and an ambition pursued with the passion that all dreams deserve. This group brought to life an institution which, despite the challenges and inevitable setbacks along the way, has grown into a firmly rooted Árvore, whose branches now extend far beyond the ambitions and dreams of its founders.

Árvore's mission is to produce, promote and commercialise artistic and editorial works, as well as to provide education and information to its members and the general public in the fields of visual arts, art studies and other areas of creativity and knowledge. It also aims to support its members in their artistic activities; establish connections with national and international organisations to encourage artistic and cultural exchange; create, organise and manage studios, classes, exhibitions and working groups within the artistic field; and promote any other activities necessary to fulfil its mission.

Over the years, Árvore has developed a rich and diverse cultural programme: conferences, lectures and discussions, exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, symposiums, workshops and independent courses, competitions, awards, books, graphic works and limited editions, as well as the production and installation of artworks. Its history includes significant moments marked by the discovery of artists and their work, the promotion of architecture, debates on Portuguese thinkers, literary criticism, tributes and collaborations with national and international institutions, embassies, theatre companies, local authorities and other cultural organisations.

Today, Árvore has approximately 600 members and a team of around ten employees. Its annual budget is funded through cultural, artistic and publishing projects developed in partnership with public and private organisations, the sale of original artworks and limited editions, educational activities in the arts, the provision of art- and culture-related services, membership fees and patronage from individuals and companies.

Where to Find Us

Since its foundation, Árvore has been based in the historic centre of Porto, on Passeio das Virtudes, in a building commissioned by José Pinto de Meireles, whose coat of arms can still be seen above the façade. Inaugurated in 1763, the building was acquired by the Cooperative in 1989 from its then owners, Dona Margarida Helena de Azevedo Albuquerque and Dr. Henrique da Costa Alemão Teixeira. Located in the heart of Jardim das Virtudes, Árvore enjoys a privileged setting with stunning views over the Douro River.
